Overview: designs, develops, builds and tests systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologiesInteracts with device, hardware and software design teams to assist in overall development of optical systems; specifying, selecting and qualifying an active and passive optical components, developing and benchmarking system performance models, developing and implementing test procedures and/or evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentationResponsibilities:
Establishes requirements for highly complex optical design projects and may lead a team responsible for establishing requirementsInsure correct features are incorporated first in the projectsInsures correct features are incorporated first in the projects
Architects and designs highly complex optical design projectsCompletes all phases of the projectsFollows through on all in-process and final inspection activities
Creates new programs, technologies and solutions based on novel or unique ideasInsures new ideas and methodologies are documented for use by the team
Uses status as a knowledge leader in optical design and functional knowledge across multiple engineering disciplines and program management to provide technical leadership to a given program
Defines requirements for and may design complex new tools to aid in the analysis and solving of complex problems
Initiates cross-company collaboration and develops positive relationships with other engineering disciplines
Exercises judgment (within broadly defined policies and practices) in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
May coordinate the activities of other personnel
Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertiseInteracts with management and senior customer personnel on matters requiring coordination across organizational linesRepresent the organization as the principal customer contact and often performs project leadership
Qualifications: minimum qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline
5 plus years’ experience in optical engineering
Experienced in optical engineering, interferometry, metrology, laser
Must be fully versed in imaging optics
Must have deep understanding from the design phase through manufacturing
Ability to come up with innovative design concepts
Preferred qualifications
Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline and 4 plus years’ experience in optical engineering
