The california department of transportation (caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistantUnder the close supervision of a senior transportation surveyor (supervisory) in a learning and support capacity, the student assistant will assist office of land surveys (ols) staff in computer aided drafting & design (cadd) support, geographic information systems (gis) support, and new technologies surveying systems.

Student assistants and graduate student assistants generally work up to 20 hours per work week (sunday-saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per work week during breaks; (winter, spring and summer).

Duties and responsibilities
In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist the chief of office survey systems with updating current and future surveys work flow documentation and training materialUnder the guidance of the chief of office survey systems, the student assistant will also help with template configuration and testing within the autocad and civil 3d environment.
Assist the chief of new technologies in drafting standards and specifications for caltrans new technologiesUnder the guidance of the chief of new technologies the student assistant will assist in creating and managing spreadsheets, charts, graphs, and other documentation of surveying processes.
Assist the chief of data management in updating, reviewing, and documenting gis work products and workflowsUnder the guidance of the chief of data management, the student assistant will create, update, and share data tables, mapping, and other products used in the production of gis within esri arcmap and/or arcpro programs.
Assist and support as other duties needed in collaboration with ols staff.
Physical requirements sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation.
