Position summary:
The project engineer is responsible for the design of tank and freight car repairs, analyzing fleet data and writing appropriate specifications and proceduresThis position requires sound engineering fundamentals and judgement while working with safety, aar & dot regulations, company fleet engineering standards and customer requirements.
Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:
Provides appropriate data and engineering analysis to support inspections and repairs of fleet tank and freight cars to maximize safety and reliability.
Reviews reports of production, malfunction, and maintenance to determine or address problems.
Gathers background information and interfaces with vendors, customers and suppliers in support of projects.
Designs, implements, and communicates, an operational plan for completing the project.
Prepares engineering designs and work specifications.
Ensures designs, specifications and procedures are updated to take advantage of new techniques, materials and regulatory requirements.
Monitors progress and performance against the project plan.
Takes action to resolve operational problems and minimize delaysIdentifies, develops, and gathers resources necessary to complete the project.
Provides technical support for the engineering process.
Coordinates the resolution of all open technical issues on assigned projects.
Performs other tasks as assigned including special design projects, troubleshooting and resolving customer issues and making technical presentations.
Works with cross-functional teams to accomplish company-wide objectives.
Maintains knowledge of regulatory rules, aar practices and fleet engineering standards.
Participates in and actively supports quality projects and activities and responsible care initiatives to ensure that the company achieves its goals.
Skills/specificatons:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong project management: can set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects concurrently.
Solid mathematical and analytical skills combined with the ability to read and understand precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
Strong understanding of mechanical device design and manufacturing principles.
Understanding of engineering analysis concepts and techniques including stress analysis and reliability analysis.
Knowledge of regulatory rules, aar practices and fleet engineering standards.
Ability to wear as required safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hats, ear plugs and respirators while at repair shops.
Ability to travel up to 25% based on project needs.
The incumbent works to always meet internal and external customer expectations by fully applying oneself to the task involved, preventing errors, and developing and implementing personal quality improvement projectsIn addition, the incumbent is required to understand the responsible care management system and actively participate in activities outlined therein.
Education/experience/qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering required; mechanical engineering preferred.
Minimum of 5-10 years of related work experience in corporate environment.
Experience in 3-d cad modeling; solid edge preferred.
Prior rail industry experience is beneficial.
