The manager of communications primarily will be responsible for assisting the director of communications in overseeing all internal and external communications, including the #realcollege blog and newsletter, with messaging that is innovative, branded, and engagingThey will be instrumental in ensuring consistent and effective social media management and will lead tasking out communications projects so that the team completes exemplary work efficiently and ahead of scheduleThe manager of communications will play a critical role to advance the organization’s quarterly and annual communications strategiesThey must thrive while handling a variety of constituencies, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, and achieving strong outcomes in a complex environment with multiple shifting priorities.
This position will be a part of the communications team that drives the overall strategy for and ensures high-quality communications and marketing outcomes of the organization on a local, regional, and national basisThis role is responsible for internal and external communications that reflect the hope center as the leader of action-based research for the #realcollege communityPerforms other related duties as assigned.
Required education & experience:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a relevant fieldA minimum of four years’ experience in a similar role with a track record of accomplishmentsAn equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Required skills & abilities:
The manager of communications will be thoroughly committed to the hope center’s strategy and missionAll candidates should have demonstrated communications experience, non-profit work is valued.
Specific requirements include:
Field-specific expertise: the manager of communications must have a detailed understanding of best practices and innovations within the communications field, preferably on a national level.
Program leadership and management: this individual will have taken a hands-on approach in leading a variety of initiativesThe ideal candidate will have a track record of effectively leading a performance-based and outcome-based program and staffThey will have developed and operationalized strategies that have taken a program or organization to the next stage of growth.
Team building and development: the successful candidate will have recruited, managed, and developed a strong team of staff, program/project managers, and/or development professionalsThis individual will serve as a “player/coach” to motivate and mentor their teamSolid judgment and demonstrable leadership skills.
Exceptional communication and influencing skills: as a voice/advocate for the hope center, manager of communications will have strong written and verbal communication skillsThey will be a persuasive, credible, and polished communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skillsThis individual must work collaboratively with internal as well as external partners and other organizations, providing exposure for program impact.
Unwavering commitment to excellence in organizational and project management with the ability to achieve strategic objectives and manage a budget.
Strong demonstrated communications management experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders including advisory groups, coalitions, forums, professional associations, foundations, corporate sponsors, and practitioner groups.
Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
Integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed with demonstrated passion for the hope center’s mission and commitment to working collaboratively with a management team of senior professionals.
A team player, who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, fast-paced work environment.
An individual who can handle a variety of constituencies, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a complex environment with multiple priorities.
Strong analytical skills; basic business intuition, and common sense.
Strong work ethic.
Proven experience creating targeted content in higher education is advantageous.
Strong knowledge of communication practices and techniques.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
Must be able to multitask and work well under deadlines and pressure across teams within the hope center.
Excellent organizational and leadership abilities.
Experience in asana or other project management systems is advantageous.
Master’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a relevant field.
Seven years’ experience in a similar role with a track record of accomplishments.
