Position summary
The public health institute is seeking a data analysis research scientist to provide real-time analytic, methodologic and interpretive data dissemination for a covid-19 surveillance project using veterans affairs (va) dataThe successful candidate will join a team which recently published a highly accessed paper on covid-19 breakthrough infections (doi: 10.1126/science.abm0620) and another paper on covid-19 therapeutics (doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2021-050051).
The data analysis research scientist will analyze archived data from the va corporate data warehouse (cdw) using methods appropriate to va data compiled from electronic health records, assist with interpretation of results, recommend analytic approaches that enhance data interpretation, and prepare tables and graphs that provide a clear, visual summary of the resultsThe position will collaborate with the surveillance team and be responsible for weekly reports, as required by the funded objectives of the project (see duties and responsibilities below)As this is a fast-paced, demanding project with weekly reporting requirements, documentation and organization of methods and results are also a critical function of this position.
Pay: $77,939 to $96,566 per yearThe typical hiring range for this position is $77,939 to $96,566 based on 100% fteThe starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and experience.
Essential duties & responsibilities
Conduct data access requests, data compilation and analysis that provides weekly trends for:
Number of and results of pcr testing (confirmed infection rates per number of pcr tests)
Deaths associated with pcr test status
Vaccination status by type and level (one, two, three homologous/heterologous vaccinations)
Relation of vaccination status by type (none, type: boosted, not boosted, homologous, heterologous) to results of pcr testing, and death outcome
As genotyping is added to metadata, identify the relation of variant to a-d above
Lingering symptoms and high service utilization following confirmed covid diagnosis.
Examine disparities in covid-19 infection trends including:
Age, race/ethnicity, socio economic status, and location (within california, and nationally) patterns
Pre-existing morbidity
Identification of high-need communities
Examine characteristics associated with:
Being unvaccinated,
High death risk (morbidity including mental health status e.gPtsd, socio-economic status, ethnicity, location within ca and nationally)
Prepare weekly tables and graphs that summarize trends and results described above.
Recommend alternative methods and analytic approaches suitable to the study design that enhance interpretation of results and conclusions.
Coordinate with surveillance team to interpret and disseminate results.
Document and organize surveillance protocol, methods and results.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of research experience, including 2 years’ experience working with the va cdw data, 2 years’ experience with sql, and 2 years’ experience with a statistical package (sas, r, stata).
Experience with remote connection to the va cdw via citrix access gateway (cag), remote enterprise security compliance update environment (rescue) or azure virtual desktop.
Command of analytic approaches and methods appropriate to large, complex observational studies and implementation of project goals.
Profound knowledge of and experience with microsoft office software, specifically word, excel, power point and access.
Strong analytical and critical thinking, writing and verbal english communication skillsAbility to convey complex analytical and technical information to fellow researchers.
Strong organizational skills, which enable documentation of tasks and determining next-steps for meeting project demands and pace.
Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines, both prescribed and self-imposed.
Detail-oriented, thorough, self-directed, and responsible.
Ability to work in a changing environment and to communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
Ability to maintain focus on technically demanding problems, including the ability to resolve remote access and data access issues.
Possess a strong sense of logic as well as problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Education
Bs degree in a related field is required, or substitute with 4 additional years of relevant experience.
Master’s or phd degree is preferred.
