The l3harris integrated mission systems (ims) segment is a recognized leader in sea, undersea, air, land and space products and systems development and integrationIms offers challenging and rewarding assignments across a broad spectrum of products and systemsThe ims segment mechanical structural engineer reports to the srManager of mechanical engineering, in support of the mechanical engineering discipline functional plans and initiatives and will also provide direct project contributions at the sector/division/site level.
As a senior member of the engineering team, the mechanical structural engineer works collaboratively with other members of the engineering team to ensure products and systems meet structural substantiation requirements including shock, vibration, fatigue damage tolerance and life assurance while ensuring cost and schedule objectives are achievedThis position will require extended periods of direct support on proposals and projects within the divisions to achieve these objectives.
Essential functions:
Provide upfront and direct hands-on support starting with the bid/proposal efforts on key pursuits through development and deployment efforts across the segment.
Includes deployment to sites to assist in the resolution of structural related issues as required
Provide structural analysis subject matter expert oversight for projects and products to ensure designs follow specifications and synergistically leverage exiting designs across the segment to reduce development efforts.
Able to apply the principles of structural mechanics to predict internal stresses and structural instabilitiesDetermine/predict failure and structural instabilities for structures giving due consideration to its material properties and applicable failure theoriesAssess/predict the affects of shock and vibration on structural components and assembliesAssess structural components for life assurance considerations, including fatigue and damage tolerance.
Assist in the l3harris digital transformation including discipline specific tool research, evaluation and deployment
Prepare and present briefings/workshops/tutorials for supported engineers, management, customers, and intra-company working groups.
Able to obtain and maintain a dod security clearance
Qualifications:
Us citizenship
Bachelor of science in civil, mechanical or aerospace engineering with emphasis on structural analysis, design, and test with a minimum of 12 years of relevant structural analysis experience; or graduate degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
Experience performing analysis to determine stress levels resulting from applied and induced loads in structure, systems and equipment.
Experience in finite element modeling and analyses codes
Experience and knowledge in ms excel, word, and power point
Familiarity with dod and commercial certification processes and requirements
Experience managing project schedules and budgets for engineering team
Preferred additional skills:
Active dod secret or ts clearance
Structural proof of concept, qualification and certification testing
Analysis of composite components and structures
Root cause corrective action (rcca) facilitator
Excellent organizational, technical writing and communication skills
Change agent with demonstrated examples; comfortable vigorously challenging the status quo and quickly making an impact.
Self-starter with ability to identify gaps and needs within an organization, and work with leadership to close those issues
