Engineering manager (director of engineering)
Illustrative mathematics (im) seeks to ensure that students, particularly historically underserved students, and their teachers have access to aligned, grade-level, mathematics curriculum resources, and that teachers experience professional learning that leads to enduring mathematical learning for their students.
The technology & information services department is responsible for developing and maintaining technology systems to support the use of im’s products, services, and partnershipsThe department supports information technology for the organization, including hardware and software for productivity, access control, security, and onboarding and offboarding usersIn addition, the department manages curriculum production and delivery, as well as measuring im’s impact on schools.
Vision for this position: the engineering manager (em) leads im’s engineering team and acts as the primary technical liaison between the team and internal and external stakeholdersIn addition to providing technical leadership, the em ensures that engineering projects are well structured and executedThe em reports to the cio.

Engineering at im:
Im’s engineering team is responsible for developing a variety of systems, including:
A custom-built content management system that allows us to export our openly-licensed k-12 mathematics curriculum in a variety of formats.
Multiple websites that provide access to the curriculum.
Multiple websites that provide customers and contractors access to information about im’s professional learning services.
Im’s engineering team primarily uses:
Ruby on rails for application development
Rspec and capybara for testing and specs
Github for version control
Circleci for ci
Heroku for server environments
Aws s3 for file storage
Css/scss/sass
Princexml for pdf generation
Shortcut for project management support
Salesforce for crm data
While experience with the above systems is a plus, we’re also excited to have candidates that can bring experience and expertise using technologies not in our current stack.
The engineering team currently consists of four engineers, plus a part-time contractorWe have plans to hire an additional engineer once the em position is filledThe team places an emphasis on collaboration with regular pair programming opportunities.
Responsibilities:
Manage, mentor, and coach engineering team members with an eye toward growing both individual and team capacity
Hire and onboard new team members
Working with the cio, provide technical direction and strategy for the engineering team
Act as technical liaison between engineering team and internal and external stakeholders
Provides regular updates to stakeholders about the work of the engineering team
Identify technical solutions to meet business problems
Plan and assign projects for the engineering team members.
Requirements:
At least 3 years of experience leading teams of engineers
At least 5 years of experience building complex web applications
Experience developing projects in ruby on rails is preferred
Experience using a project management tool
A positive mindset and attitude to continuously push the organization to accomplish its mission
Experience working in a remote environment a plus
Demonstrated commitment to seeking and listening to feedback that encourages growth, surfaces blindspots, and recognizes and disrupts patterns of inequity
