Summary
The team’s mission is to empower investment decisions within the harbor investments group by leveraging data and enhancing analytical processes to generate innovative insightsThis is accomplished through the combination of continuously evolving internal data sets and analytical capabilities, external data sets and tools, and an innovative mindsetThe team is charged with establishing and continuously improving analytical processes, producing robust and timely insights, and applying new industry technologies to enhance decision making.
The quantitative research analyst will be responsible for applying data-driven tools to extract efficiencies and add value to key business decision making across the harbor investments group functions:
Investments data & enhanced analytics team “idea” (analytics and data science team)
Multi asset solutions group or “mast” (internal portfolio management team)
Investments research team or “irt” (external manager research, manager due diligence)
Investments specialist team or “ist” (product specialists)
Product strategy & management team or “product” (product management and product development)
The quantitative research analyst will join the idea team to develop frameworks to extract signals from various data sources for quantitative modelingThe quantitative research analyst will also collaborate with harbor’s technology team to continuously develop data science capabilities and ensure smooth transition of key initiatives from a development stage to a production stage.
Key responsibilities
General team responsibilities
Support the four investment functions listed above (irt, mast, ist, and product) through evaluation and application of investment, financial, economic, and/or statistical data.
Develop and articulate insights using qualitative and quantitative inputs from discussions with portfolio management teams, other researchers, market data, analytical tools, and databases.
Proactively search for new and enhanced methods for identifying, evaluating, and communicating sources of alpha.
Key position responsibilities
Collaborate closely with the director of quantitative research, director of investment analytics & insights, and various other members of the investments group to implement the prototyping of new data sets, models, and dashboards that provide value add to the investment decision making process.
Participate in research and development of data analytics for asset allocation, market regime modeling, investment strategies backtesting and other investment related projects.
Perform ad hoc quantitative analyses.
Present research findings to peers and stakeholders.
Maintain documentation of model assumptions, analytics definitions, limitations and production workflows.
Explore technology and analytical tools to establish robust process or enhance existing framework that helps solve investment questions or improve efficiency.
Collaborate with harbor’s technology team to maintain and improve research and production workflows.
Contribute to the strategic planning of data solutions within the harbor investments group.

Minimum qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, financial engineering, mathematics, operations research, physics, statistics, or another quantitative disciplineAdvanced/graduate degree preferred.
3-5 years investment related experience preferred.
Progress toward the cfa designation preferred.
Quantitative skills, including proficiency in statistical analysis, quantitative analysis, and predictive analytics.
Solid understanding of financial markets, investing theories, and econometric analysisExperience with backtesting, factor investing, portfolio construction and/or risk management a plus.
Expert level scripting language skills (python and/or r preferred).
Strong working knowledge of data preprocessing, data analysis, performing data validations.
Capable of investigating, familiarizing, and mastering new data sets quickly.

Strong analytical skills and knowledge of quantitative analysis essentialSolid understanding in regression techniques requiredExperience with machine learning preferred.
Strong ability to communicate complex ideas effectively using various methods (data visualization, in-person/virtual presentations, and written/verbal communications).
Must be able to work both independently and in collaboration with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
Experience in handling statistical modeling of large complex data sets and/or designing statistical inference models and predictive analytics.
Knowledge of software and database design related to various financial analytics’ components including factor modeling, portfolio analysis, and back-testing.
Experience working with relational databases (sql server, postgres, oracle, etc.).
Knowledge of any visualization or bi tool like tableau, qlikview, power bi etcIs a plus.
Experience deriving actionable insights from complex or ambiguous data.
Experience or strong interest in building ml models and developing api interfaces.
