Position title: civil & transmission line engineer
Department: 820 – engineering & project management
Flsa status: exempt
Location: woods run
Reports to: manager, civil & transmission line engineering
Peer positions: engineer i, engineer ii, engineer iii, engineer iv
The engineer will design projects in civil and transmission line engineering.
Transmission line engineering (25%) – the engineer designs and prepares construction drawings for electrical power lines of 138kv and 345kv voltagesThis includes plan and profiles drawings, sag tables, bill of materialsThe engineer must be knowledgeable in transmission line design philosophies, constructability of the transmission lines, and regulatory requirementsThe engineer must be proficient in pls-cadd, tower, pls-pole, and mfad.
Structural engineering (25%) – the engineer designs and prepares construction drawings for concrete foundations, breaker beams, and structural connectionsThe engineer prepares bill of materials lists, drawings, and work with dlc shops to purchase and fabricate the itemsRisa 3d expertise preferredThe engineer ensures that sound engineering principles are employed in accordance with all applicable duquesne light company standards and federal, state, and local codes - asce, aisc, astm, ansi, osha, etc…
Project management (25%) – the engineer must be able to manage large scale design projects that are outsourced to vendorsResponsibilities include attending meetings, answering emails, providing standards, managing the design deliverable schedule, reviewing all vendor deliverables, and managing invoices.
Standards (5%) – the engineer is involved in developing company standards for civil engineering and transmission line engineering designsThe engineer works collaboratively with other engineers and dlc departments to develop documents, standards, and process improvements.
Field investigations (20%) – the engineer must visit the field to support current construction projects, maintenance emergent work, field verification, field inspection, construction inspection, etc… the engineer must be available to visit the field (including weekends and evenings) in support of emergent work.
The engineer provides thorough updates on a weekly, monthly and annual basis for the work plan to the managerThe engineer participates in the civil & transmission line engineering staff meetingsThe engineer attends external and internal civil engineering design coursesThe engineer provides direction to junior engineers on engineering designs.
Bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from an abet accredited university or college.
Preferred 2 years of relevant experience.
Must embrace a safety culture and maintain safe work environment for co-workers and the public.
Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem solving skills.
Experience in pls-cadd, risa 3d, mfad or willingness to acquire skills in these software.
Position to be filled at the engineer i, ii, iii, or iv level based upon relevant work experienceEngineer iv level requires a pe license and a minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience to the utility industry.
Work location is typical office environment - desk and computer work is requiredEvening and weekend work may be required(this position would start with remote work, subject to the company’s pending flexible work policy).
Must be able to walk on uneven ground to various facilities and right-of-way locations for field investigations as required.
Must possess valid driver’s license and be able to drive to various company locationsMay be required to drive in inclement weather to support emergency service restoration obligations.

Work is mostly location independent
Requirements for on-site presence are largely driven by role specific tasks that need to be done in person, example face-to-face interviews, business process design sessions, regular team-building/brainstorming sessions, etc.
