Break through tech works at the intersection of academia and industry to propel more underrepresented women into higher education and careers in tech - with a particular emphasis on black, latinx, indigenous, and first- generation college going women and non-binary students.
Hosted by cornell tech, break through tech ai is the new program from break through tech on a mission to credential and fast-track undergraduate women into careers in the fastest-growing areas of tech: data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligenceDeveloped with industry leaders, the break through tech ai program includes three high-level components that are considered critical for increasing the competitiveness and marketability of students pursuing ai/ml engineering roles: (1) skills-based training, (2) industry-relevant portfolios, and (3) mentorship, career coaching, and job placement supportOver the next four years, the break through tech ai program will expand nationwide to foster a diverse next generation of ai leaders who will build ai technologies that are fairer and more representative of our society.
Cornell tech seeks an assistant director of the ai studio who will oversee the successful delivery of a customized version of the studio program at cornell tech in new york city as the inaugural host site for the programThe assistant director of the ai studio will learn from best practices for corporate engagement and curriculum-specific partnerships to customize and execute the ai studio program to meet the needs of break through tech ai in the new york regionAs a key connector for the program, the assistant director of the ai studio will develop significant working relationships with nyc’s leading companies for the inaugural host site, while coordinating with the assistant director of career development and mentorship, as well as the coordinator of student recruitment and placement to ensure seamless collaboration across the programThe assistant director of the ai studio will report into the director of host site program, and work closely with the break through tech ai national program office and cornell tech studio team.
The assistant director of the ai studio must have strong organizational skills and significant experience in both relationship management and program execution, with the ability to set priorities and coordinate ongoing activities in parallel, manage competing demands, and provide timely responses to urgent issuesThe ideal candidate has a flexible, entrepreneurial spirit, thrives in a startup environment, has the ability to connect academic culture and curriculum to real-world digital culture, and excels in development and management of both personal and corporate partnerships.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 4-year term position with the possibility of renewalThis position requires occasional work on evenings and weekends, particularly during the academic yearThe responsibilities may be completed primarily remotely during the initial employment period and would be expected to work on location on our cornell tech nyc campus when instruction resumes in person.
Key responsibilities include:
(1) plan, lead, and oversee the execution of the break through tech ai studio program within the new york city region (60%)
Manage the moving pieces of the ai studio program, including portfolio development, practitioner feedback sessions, and sprints.
Lead the recruitment of studio tas from the new york metropolitan area.
Forming and managing student teams, including escalations for any off-track project teams.
Plan and execute quarterly in-person maker day events, including organizing guest speakers, workshops, and all event logistics.
Plan and manage the work of ai studio program staff and volunteers.
Develop, document, and operate tools and systems to coordinate engagements between students and corporate partners.
(2) develop and manage corporate partnerships and solicit ai studio project submissions from companies in the new york city region(20%)
Develop a plan to source and recruit a diverse portfolio of industry partners to submit break through tech ai studio projects, including tech companies, startups, non-profits, and ngos, as well as entrepreneurs, product managers, and engineering managers.
Serve as a spokesperson for the ai studio while engaging with new corporations and startup companies.
Manage actively engaged partners, including onboarding, ongoing communications, quality assessment, feedback, and best practices.
Guide project submissions and provide coaching and feedback to ensure that projects are of the appropriate type, scope, and rigor.
Work with industry company advisors for each project team to ensure their satisfaction and ongoing program engagement.
Track all corporate relationships within the break through tech ai program crm.
(3) build and scale a practitioner engagement program(20%)
Plan practitioner engagement events to activate a broader group of industry experts to mentor and advise break through tech ai students.
Actively help students resolve obstacles and maintain forward progress.
Master’s degree with 3-5 years of experience or an equivalent combination.
Passion for diversity in tech, education, and social impact.
Work in either an academic or corporate setting coordinating or managing relationships, event planning, or program development and implementation.
Must have very strong organizational skills and and program management skills with experience planning and executing large academic or corporate programsProven ability to operate in a self-directed fashion.
Proven ability to create, operationalize, and manage project plans and deadlines.
Experience and demonstrated success working in leadership roles in program development and execution in the areas of education, training, talent development, internship and/or mentorship programs, and/or student services.
Has the ability to communicate and “sell in” academic and corporate leaders to strategic opportunities for programmatic engagement.
Ability to communicate with, work effectively with, and maintain a positive rapport with students, professors and corporate leaders alike.
Strong interpersonal skills and relationship building qualities are essential in order to expand corporate engagement.
Must be able to take a leadership role as public spokesperson for the break through tech ai program in the local market.
Additional relevant work experience beyond 5 years.
Experience with salesforce or equivalent crm tool.
