Job summary
The principal human factors engineer for medical device solutions will be an integral part of the multi-disciplinary teams that we form around each project and dedicate to achieving that project’s goalOur team-based approach means you will work side-by-side with other human factors engineers as well as industrial designers, mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineers; electrical and mechanical designers and technicians; material scientists, and any other disciplines needed for each projectYour coworkers will range from new college graduates to those with 30+ years of experienceThe unique backgrounds and work experiences brought by each team member lends diversity to the development process, which results in both product innovation as well as an engaging work environmentThe successful candidate has the chance to build and draw upon a solid foundation of skills through work in the general context of medical product developmentProjects can last from just a few months to several years and the successful candidate will contribute to many different projects over the yearsEach project presents its own set of requirements and challenges, so you will continue to experience career growth as a human factors research scientist through regular opportunities to apply your skills to those new challenges.
Major responsibilities
Meet with clients to learn about new technologies and interpret client needs for consultation on usability engineering
Contribute to marketing and proposal development activities
Perform task analyses and user research studies for new medical device concepts
Author and update usability risk analyses in collaboration with coworkers and clients
Author formative and summative usability study protocols
Plan and coordinate usability studies, including gathering equipment, designing and preparing study models, and coordinating with recruiters
Moderate formative and summative usability studies and/or record data
Perform data analysis and analysis of usability study video footage to identify root cause of observed use errors
Prepare and/or assist with formal usability study reports
Create usability engineering documentation
Conduct above technical work on projects with minimal guidance and within time, budget and quality system constraints
Support both formal and informal communications and relationships with clients including responsibility for reports and presentations
Contribute to user interface designs by providing guidance, ideas, and feedback to clients and conducting usability studies

The following is required
Experience across the medical device development continuum, from concept development activities through product launch.
Degree in human factors engineering, human factors psychology, experimental psychology, cognitive psychology, cognitive systems engineering or biomedical engineering required:
Ba/bs with 10+ years of experience working with commercial and/or government clients
Ms/ma with 8+ years of experience working with commercial and/or government clients
Or equivalent combination of education and experience
A solid understanding of the theories, principles, and data associated with human performance capabilities and limitations (perceptual, cognitive, motor, biomechanical, and anthropometric) as demonstrated by successful completion of relevant coursework in the associated degree.
Proven experience in the human factors (hf) principles/methods of human-centered design, observational research, ergonomic design, human/machine interface, and data collection/analysis as demonstrated by a track record of involvement in research, design, and evaluation projects(including executed irb study work.)
Proven experience executing hf projects to schedule and budget; managing hf project teams; and interfacing directly with client hf technical representatives.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with both internal and external counterparts.
Proficient use of microsoft office, excel, and other standard programs for professional work.

The following is desired
Experience working within medical device development quality systems(iso 13485, 90001, etc).
Experience applying standards and guidance as documented in the following:
Ansi/aami/iec 62366-1:2015 medical devices – part 1: application of usability engineering to medical devices
Aami/iec tir62366-2:2016 medical devices – part 2: guidance on the application of usability engineering to medical devices
Ansi/aami he75: 2009/(r)2018 human factors engineering – design of medical devices
User experience (ux) or certified usability analyst (cua) certification.
